What Is a Sinus Lift?
Sinus lifts, also called sinus augmentations, are a surgical procedure used to prepare a patient for dental implants by thickening the bone in the upper jaw. It's a routine, relatively simple procedure in which your Columbia implant dentist will create more room for the jaw by "lifting" the bottom of the sinus membrane and then adding bone to the jaw to increase jaw height. This is necessary because for some patients, the sinuses are too close to the jaw to safely place dental implants. Sinus lifts create enough jaw height to place implants and help you achieve your new smile. We may also recommend sinus lift surgery to patients who've experienced bone loss from periodontal disease, or have lost teeth in the upper jaw and are at risk of bone loss.
The Sinus Lift Surgery Procedure
Sinus lifts are a relatively minor surgery providing lasting benefits. First, your Columbia periodontist will carefully cut the gum tissue to expose the jawbone, then create a small, oval-shaped "window" in the bone and use it to lift the membrane lining your sinus, pushing it away from the jaw. From there, Dr. McKenzie will place bone-graft material where the sinus was, then carefully close the incisions and complete the surgical process. Over time, the bone graft material will stimulate growth of the jawbone, creating a thicker jaw.
What Happens After Sinus Lift Surgery?
Side effects from sinus lift surgery are relatively mild, but it's normal to experience some swelling and bleeding from the mouth or nose after the procedure. This should fade shortly. It will take several months for the bone-graft material to stimulate growth and integrate with your jaw, but once bone growth is complete, we can safely place a set of dental implants and complete your new smile.
