What Are Implant Supported Dentures?
Implant-supported dentures are over-dentures that are supported by implants. The dental implant serves as the tooth root, and a denture attaches to the implant. These types of dentures are more stable than regular dentures, and work well for individuals that are missing teeth, but have enough jawbone to support implants. You can receive denture-supported implants on your upper or lower jaw.
What Is The Procedure For Dental Implants?
The timeline for the implant procedure varies from person-to-person. On average, the entire process takes about 5-7 months. However, in some conditions, the process can last over a year. The steps for dental implant include:
- Consultation - Dr. McKenzie completes a thorough analysis to determine the ideal placement of the implant.
- Surgical Procedure (Osseointegration) – The implants are placed in your jawbone. The surgical area is given time to heal, usually 5-6 months.
- Surgical Procedure – Following the recovery period, another procedure takes place to uncover the tops of the implants.
- Prosthetic Placement – The supporting bar and prosthetic tooth are attached to the implant.
What Are the Benefits Of Implant-Supported Dentures?
Dental implants can be beneficial to the health and maintenance of your jawbone. When you have few or no teeth left to stimulate the jawbone, reabsorption occurs, resulting in diminishing facial structure. Applying implants-supported dentures can prevent this reabsorption. You may also be able to eat certain foods you were not able chew prior to having the dentures. In general, implant-supported dentures are more stable and comfortable than regular dentures that can move around in the mouth, and even slide off.
